FTO – Field Training Officer
Being an FTO is the most important role in policing. This comprehensive training program focuses on developing the expertise required to mentor and evaluate new recruits or probationary officers effectively, ensuring they meet the required standards for safe and effective policing.
This 40-hour, POST accredited course, is designed for officers who have recently been appointed as Field Training Officers or who hope to be in the future. Our course covers roles and responsibilities of the FTO, effective communication and feedback, leadership, strategies for patrol success, officer safety and intervention, characteristics of effective officers, and a thorough explanation and application of the San Jose FTO Grading Model. The course will combine lecture and student activities which will include scenario-based learning.
This course is funded by the OCJP Violent Crime Intervention Fund and is available for a limited time at no cost to Tennessee law enforcement agencies.
